Have you ever heard the phrase "A smile is worth a thousand words?" Well, after listiening to Ron Gutman: "The hidden power of smiling" on Ted Talks, it seems it's value can mean so much more.
Ron embarked on his journey of what "powers" a smile holds after he realized that science fiction superpowers really don't exist. He was now a grown man now, so his 30 year journey of observing and studing smiles began. He felt that human smiles had a truth behind them, and held mysterious super powers of their own.
In Ron's research, he learned that researchers were able to predict how full-filling and long-lasting a subjects marriage would be, or how well someone would score on standardized testing. Another great moment for Ron was when he came across a 2010 Wayne State University research project that looked into predicting 1950's baseball cards of Major League Players. Players who didn't smile in their pictures lived an average of only 72.9 years, while players with beaming smiles lived an average of 80 years.
As you can see, your smile could be worth more than a thousand words. Your smile could actually be your own "superpower" to your fountain of youth. All I know is after listening to Run Gutman, I'm going to be smiling a lot more leading up to taking my SAT's.
